Keep a digital journal (and keep it alive)

How to keep a useful digital journal: short rituals, structure, and how it differs from a social network.

Digital journals fail for the same reason paper notebooks do: we aim too long, too perfect, too often. The goal isn’t a nightly essay — it’s a clear trace of your current season.

What a good digital journal holds

  • What you’re building now (projects, learning).
  • What feeds you (reading, practices, people).
  • One or two “life lately” photos to ground the present.
  • A season line: what this period is teaching you.

A 10-minute ritual

Pick a fixed slot (Sunday evening, Wednesday noon). Write three lines max. If you miss a week, resume — the journal isn’t a tyrannical streak.

On LifArcs, Present plays that role: what you’re living now, not an infinite feed. Past stays in chapters; Future keeps intention.

Journal vs social network

A network pushes you to publish for others. A digital journal serves you first. Then you choose what becomes public. That separation — write for yourself, share by choice — avoids performance fatigue.
